DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES - ONE TO THREE MONTHS

Gross Motor and Fine Motor

• Raises head and chest when lying on stomach
• Supports upper body with arms when lying on stomach
• Waves, kicks, and squirms when lying on stomach or back
• Opens and shuts hands
• Pushes down on legs when feet are placed on a firm surface
• Brings hands to mouth
• Swipes at dangling objects with hands
• Grasps toys or other objects when put in hand; shakes them

Language

• Smiles at the sound of familiar voices or sight of familiar faces
• Begins to babble
• Says “ooh” and “ahh”
• Laughs and possibly squeals

Personal and Social

• Begins to smile in response to someone else’s smile
• Enjoys playing with others and may cry when people stop or leave
• Becomes more communicative and expressive with face and body
• Imitates some movements and facial expressions
• Appears fussy at times, often at the end of the day

Other Characteristics and Behaviors to Expect

• Watches faces intently
• Responds to loud sounds by becoming quiet and still, or with general body
• movements
• Follows moving objects
• Recognizes familiar objects and people at a distance
• Looks at own hands and starts using hands and eyes in coordination
• Stares at things a lot

Talk with Your Child’s Doctor if Your Child

• Doesn’t seem to respond to loud sounds
• Doesn’t smile at the sound of your voice by two months
• Doesn’t follow moving objects with eyes by two to three months
• Doesn’t grasp and hold objects by three months
• Doesn’t smile back at people by three months
• Can’t support head well at three months
• Doesn’t babble by three to four months
• Has trouble moving one or both eyes in all directions
• Has eyes that are crossed or don’t move together most of the time
• Doesn’t notice new faces
